Some of the best baby portraits are with naked babies and a simple prop. A simple pastel baby dress or one piece for a boy is always great.
Be aware that layers of dresses are very messy on young babies not sitting up yet. And boys dressed in suspenders that tend to fall down or collars that won’t quite lay down are also not the best clothing to dress baby in. If your baby will wear an outfit with a collar, please stitch it down to keep it out of babies face.
Remember, these portraits will hang in your home for many years. Try to dress baby in clothes that will not clash with your décor. Neutral solid colors are usually a great choice and will match almost any décor.
Maternity/Newborn -
3 months -
6 months -
9 months -
12 months
Session 1: Maternity/Newborn-2 Months
White is awesome for this stage. Black and white portraits are my favorite at this stage, however, you may choose if you want color or black and white portraits or both! Keep clothing simple; a white button blouse for mom, and a white onesie for baby. If you want to have an outfit, try to find one without a collar or with very few ruffles for girls. They tend to hide baby.s face and are hard to work with. You may want to bring a special blanket or stuffed animal as a prop.
Session 2: 3 Months
Again, simple is best. Onesies are great. Also this is a great time to get bare bottom shots and baby in just a diaper with a blanket or feather boa. Lots of up close shots this time to capture that beautiful smile!
Session 3: 6 Months
Schedule this session when baby has learned to sit up well. Neutral solid colors are best. Jeans, khaki pants, and soft solid pastel shirt for boys, and pastel colored dresses for girls are cute. You can bring a couple of different outfits with you.
Session 4: 9 Months
Schedule this session as soon as baby is pulling up. Try to keep the same neutral solid colors in all sessions. This is a great session to try overalls.
Session 5: 12 months
Happy Birthday! Baby has changed so much!! Again, neutral solid colors. This will keep a nice continual blending of each portrait in your home.
